The Rookery - "Greater Cleaveland's Best Kept Secret"

What’s a rookery? According to Dictionary.com, it’s a “place where several rooks or crows congregate.” It’s also the name of a famous castle that once stood in Chesterland, Washington County, Ohio. The cast of the Disney cartoon Robin Hood, set in England, modeled the castle after the Rookery, which was initially built in 1892 and designed to house a colony of rooks. The building: a rambling, red-brick structure, was home to an impressive array of birds, including owls, hawks, and eagles. Over time, it became one of the largest collections of birds in the world. Today, the Rookery is a shadow of its former self, but Chesterland’s favorite landmark and a symbol of a community that is proud of its past remains.
